Ceiling Height vs. Lowering Distance: What to Measure Before Buying

“My ceiling is 20 feet high” is useful information—but it is not the required lift travel. The chandelier may already hang below the ceiling, and its proposed maintenance position must account for its size and the space around it.

Describe three different measurements

Ceiling height
The floor-to-ceiling measurement at the installation area. For a sloped or stepped ceiling, show where the measurement was taken.
Normal hanging position
The fixture’s installed position during ordinary use. Record a clearly identified reference point, such as the lowest point of the chandelier, and its height above the floor.
Required lowering distance
The vertical change from the normal position to the proposed service position, measured using the same reference point. The installer must confirm how this translates into the exact lift’s usable movement.

A simple measurement example

Suppose the chosen reference point is 18 ft above the floor in normal use and would be 5 ft above the floor at a proposed service position:

18 ft − 5 ft = 13 ft of vertical change.

The ceiling itself could be higher than 18 ft. This arithmetic does not set a safe service height, confirm a model’s suitability, or account for every installation allowance. Your installer must check the fixture geometry and the exact model’s instructions.

Check the whole movement path

Photograph the space below and around the fixture. Include stair rails, landings, furniture and any architectural features that could obstruct the chandelier. Its widest and lowest parts matter, not just the central suspension point. Do not assume a large room guarantees a clear lowering path.

Compare required movement with model travel

Our current 20 kg, 180 kg and 230 kg model information lists up to 5 m (16.4 ft) of travel. The 40 kg, 80 kg, 130 kg and 250 kg models list up to 6 m (19.7 ft). Maximum travel is a model limit, not a promise that every site can use the entire distance.

Ask the installer to check operating limits, fixture and suspension dimensions, mounting arrangement, clearances and any model-specific allowances. Do not plan around exceeding a travel limit or changing limit settings without the manufacturer’s instructions.
